​Why does an artist choose paint themselves? What aspects of personality and psychology is an artist trying to capture by portraying their own visage?  What does self-portraiture tell us about the artists themselves? How do artists paint their hands when they are in the act of painting? 

Why did two of the greatest artists in the western Canon- Durer and Rembrandt - paint themselves so frequently?     

Join Dr Vincent de Luise for a Zoom conversation and PowerPoint talk on the fascinating topic of self-portraiture, with specific reference to Albrecht Dürer’s remarkable self-portraits beginning in his teen-age years, and Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn’s evolution of the technique of self-portraiture. 

The lecture will also include an analysis of self-portraiture over the centuries, including works by Michelangelo, Leonardo, Caravaggio, Titian, Gentileschi, Velazquez, Goya, Manet, van Gogh and Chuck Close.

Bio:

Vincent de Luise M.D. is an assistant clinical professor of ophthalmology at Yale University School of Medicine and the Cultural Ambassador of the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra. Dr de Luise is on the adjunct faculty of the Weill Cornell Medical College, where he serves on the Humanities and Medicine Committee and the Music and Medicine Initiative. ​He is president of the Connecticut Summer Opera Foundation and lectures frequently about music and the arts.
