This popular monthly writer’s forum is for beginner and seasoned writers who write for children and young adults. If you are interested in sharing your work for gentle critique and feedback, this monthly group may be just for you. This is a great opportunity to share your work with fellow writers in a positive, non-judgmental format.

Please try to keep pieces to 5 pages, doubled spaced.

***Remember that you never need to make an edit to your piece just because someone suggested it. Your piece is your own.  You only need to take what is most helpful to you.

Admission is via a “Tip Jar.” Use the dropdown menu to choose an amount. There is still a free option; all tips are greatly appreciated.

The Writer’s Forum is limited to 8 participants. Students must register by Tuesday, June 6, to receive the Zoom link.

Tina Tocco’s writing for children has appeared in Highlights, Highlights High Five, Cricket, AppleSeeds, Humpty Dumpty, Turtle Magazine for Preschool Kids, Pockets, and other children’s publications. She is the author of the children’s poetry collection The Hungry Snowman and Other Poems (Kelsay Books, 2019). Tina’s fiction, nonfiction, and poetry have also been published in various literary journals and anthologies, such as New Ohio Review, Crab Creek Review, Potomac Review, River Styx, Harpur Palate, Ovunque Siamo, Best Small Fictions 2019, and Wild Dreams: The Best of Italian Americana. In 2019, she was nominated for a Pushcart Prize in fiction. Tina earned her MFA in creative writing from Manhattanville College, where she was editor-in-chief of Inkwell, the college’s national literary journal.

Writer’s Workshop

Online/In-Person

Writers may work alone but the feedback of other writers is vital. The Writers’ Workshop gives students an opportunity to share their works-in-progress with fellow writers under the guidance of instructor Nancy McMillan.

Writers can bring in up to five double-spaced pages to be read aloud and critiqued. Writers will receive constructive feedback from other writers and the instructor. Critique guidelines will be provided.  The workshop runs for two hours, to allow plenty of time for each writer to receive thorough attention.

The Workshop runs for two hours and the fee for the workshop is $30. All levels are welcome.

Workshop is limited to 6 students. All students must register by Thursday, March 16 to receive the Zoom link. Students have the option to take this workshop ONLINE on Zoom or in-person.

Dorothy Lyman (Actor, Playwright) is a two-time Emmy Award winner for her work as Opal Gardner on “All My Children” and is widely known for her co-starring role on “Mama’s Family,” alongside Vicki Lawrence and Carol Burnett.

In addition to her numerous film and television appearances, Ms. Lyman also directed 75 episodes of the Fran Drescher sitcom “The Nanny.” Her other plays are Enemy (an adaptation of Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People), A Rage in Tenure, and Soft Landing (directed by John Tillinger,) all developed and produced by Players Workshop in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. In The Bleak Midwinter was produced in New York City and Westchester in 2019. We Have To Hurry, starring Elliott Gould and Alfred Molina, was produced on ZOOM during the pandemic.

Ms. Lyman’s directing career began in 1980 when she produced and directed the original off-Broadway production of A Coupla White Chicks Sitting Around Talking starring Susan Sarandon and Eileen Brennan, and the subsequent national tour starring Elizabeth Ashley and Susan Anton. Her feature films, The Northern Kingdom and Split Ends, are available on Netflix. 

She lives in Washington Depot, Connecticut and New York City. Violet And Me is Ms. Lyman’s second one-person play. The first, My Kitchen Wars, adapted from the book by Betty Fussell,was produced in New York City and Los Angeles.

Arts Escape invites writers to share their creative work in our monthly open mic. Bring your work-in-progress-either fiction or non-fiction-or something new you’re trying out. It promises to be an evening of fun, support, and community. Want to listen only? We welcome you. Reservations are required and participants are limited to 20
