Drawing I & II

Are you interested in learning how to draw? Has it been years since you practiced and you feel rusty? In this class you will familiarize yourself with the core fundamental aspects of drawing; contour, shape, and value. Through fun and practical drawing assignments you will learn a set of foundational skills that will allow you to explore art on your own.

*For those who have taken Jesse Smolover’s previous class, this continuing class will have different exercises and a new syllabus for you to expand and continue your journey.

The fee for the 5-week course is $120 which includes pencils and erasers.

Students are required to bring a 11 X 14 spiral bound sketchbook – not high quality.

***Students must be registered and paid in full three business days before the start of the class/workshop. Exceptions only with permission from the Director of Fine Art/Photography.

Jesse Smolover graduated from RISD (Rhode Island School of Design) in 2004 with a BFA in Illustration. Since then he has worked as a freelance illustrator, graphic designer, and as an on-site illustrator for an archeological dig. For the past fifteen years he has taught traditional and digital art to students of all ages in subjects ranging from beginner drawing, to figure drawing, comic book art, to sculpture.

Acting Is Easy – A Free “Playshop”

This free PLAYSHOP is for all levels of actors, from beginners to seasoned community theatre actors and professionals.

Acting is about playing. That is why they call it a Play.

Participants will begin with non-verbal communication theatre games. In a user-friendly environment, students will learn by doing. Then students will venture into verbal communication and be introduced to script analysis and creating characters, all of which works for any genre.  Participants will do both very short monologues and dialogues.  No memorization will be necessary. 

Dress in comfortable clothes you can move in.

This workshop will be followed by a four-week class on Saturday mornings in May. See this listing on our website.

This introductory workshop is free! The minimum is 6 participants, and the maximum is 20.

OX has been a professional actor for twenty years with work on Broadway, Off-Broadway, in feature films, TV movies and daytime, commercials, and voice-overs. OX is the creator of Acting is Easy, a user-friendly acting technique that works for all genres.

He has taught acting technique to over 5,000 actors, models, athletes, and amateurs of all ages, including work with physically and mentally challenged students. OX is the owner of The Acting Laboratory, one of the first on-camera acting training centers in the East. As a casting director, he has overseen 50,000 individual auditions and has directed over 100 plays, musicals, revues, television commercials, and promotional videos.

Step by Step Acrylic Painting Class – Spring Session #1

This workshop is for all levels of painters, especially the beginner student. Students will be working from reference photos provided by Anda prior to each class. She will discuss and demonstrate value studies of each composition which will become the layout for your painting. Instruction will be given on the importance of light and shadow which creates interesting and emotional drama in your paintings. ** **Students should print the photo reference prior to class.

*Students must be registered and paid in full three business days before the start of the class/workshop. Exceptions only with permission from the Director of Fine Art/Photography.

The fee for the five-week class is $295 and limited to 8 students.

For those students who don’t have supplies, there is a $25 supply fee which includes 2 canvases,”golden” paints and “stay-wet” products for use with the Masterson acrylic palettes used in this class. A variety of acrylic brushes are available as well as the Masterson palettes. They can be purchased or returned after the five weeks of classes. When registering, use the drop-down menu to add supplies to the class price.

If the student wishes to use Princeton Catalyst Brushes, they can be purchased at Jerry’s Artarama or Dick Blick Stores.

Anda Styler – Artist/ Instructor Anda lives in Sandy Hook, Connecticut and has been painting in oils and acrylics since she was 16. Acrylics, however, remain her favorite medium. Anda graduated from the Parson School of Design and has been devoted to her art ever since. She has many accomplishments in the art world, including interviews with both local and national publications, such as American Art Collector, Who’s Who in America,Country Gardeners Magazine, Victoria Magazine along with numerous awards and recognitions for her work as a painter.
Anda’s paintings and techniques are published in two books by North Light Publications. Her works are currently represented by several galleries in and around New England and to her credit, she has had many one-woman shows with great success. Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago is lucky to have four of her large paintings in their permanent collection.

Watercolor with The Masters with Sandra Cointreau

For each class, students will choose an example painting by a master watercolorist and learn how to recreate that painting. If desired, students can choose a painting done by the instructor to begin.

Students will learn about composition, value contrast, color mixing, color choices, the variety of brushes to use, painting techniques of layering and creating texture, and the importance of a focal point. By learning a wide range of styles and approaches that make watercolor dance its dance, each student sclass will find their own preferred style and approach to working with watercolor. The class emphasis will be on painting; no drawing skills are required.

The fee for the six-week course is $295 and class is limited to 10 students.

After years of work in oils, Sandra Cointreau embraced watercolor as her challenging dance partner in the 80s. She finds the interplay of the range of transparent, granulating. and crystal-based paints with the wide variety of available papers endlessly enjoyable. Sandra, a civil engineer, does engineering fieldwork globally for about a third of the year and travels with her watercolors. She likes to share what she has learned through her thousands of hours of study, and she enjoys teaching. Her work has been included in juried Watercolor Society shows, galleries throughout CT, and Riverwind Gallery in Beacon, NY. She has had solo shows in several CT restaurants.
