Oil and Cold Wax – Collage & Mark Making in Small Places

Course Objectives:To learn the Oil & Cold Wax process and to experience some of its possibilities.

Artists/Students will learn about the oil & cold wax experience from mixing to applying it, using unconventional tools to create different mark-making textures. Cold wax is buttery soft and when mixed with oil paint adds body, transparency and depth to the painting. This class will begin with a demonstration of the Oil & Cold Wax Medium on 140 lb paper. The technique of mixing oil paint and cold wax, the use of various tools will be demonstrated, how to incorporate collage paper, the use of charcoal, graphite and other mark making tools will be used in a series of small paintings done on 22”x30” paper divided into 6 small paintings..

Large sheet of cardboard or shirt boxes, used to transport wet work home.

The fee for the one-day workshop is $165 and limited to 10 students.

There is an additional $10 fee paid to the instructor at the time of class. ( Fee covers the cold wax, oil paints, 140lb watercolor paper, and all mark making tools).  

COVID POLICYOnly fully vaccinated students will be permitted to attend classes. Physical proof of vaccination will be requested on the first day of class.(One time Only) Don’t forget to bring your vaccination card.

Diane Brown is an award-winning mixed media artist, specializing in Oil & Cold Wax. She exhibits in the New England area, Oregon and in NYC.

She is an Elected Artist at the Mystic Museum of Art, an Artist Member of The Artist Cooperative Gallery of Westerly, a member of Maple and Main Gallery, the New Haven Paint & Clay Club, The Newport Museum of Art and the Art League of New Britain, South County Art Association, The Allied Artists of America, an Associate Member of the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Center, Essex Art Association, The Salmagundi Club and Lyme Art Association.

She has been commissioned by The Rose Project in Bethesda, Maryland as well as at Eastern Connecticut State University.

She has produced commissions for individual residences in Georgia, Florida and Connecticut.

Painting Creatively from Photos

Oil & Acrylic Workshop

Most artists use source photos in some capacity when they work, whether to jog their memory of a particular place and time or to record specific visual details to incorporate in later pieces.

In this workshop students will learn to paint in a creative, personal, and expressive way using reference photographs – freeing them from copying.

Learn to dismiss the sense of obligation to show exactly what is depicted in the photo and feel free and inspired to manipulate the composition, assuring vitality and making the painting your personal creation.

Bring several canvases and reference photos. A suggested materials list will be provided upon registration.

The one-day workshop fee is $65 and is limited to 10 students.

Souby Boski has been an Art teacher in the CT public schools and Adjunct Professor of Art at Naugatuck Valley Community College. Since 2004, she has been teaching painting classes and workshops at area art education venues in CT, NY, MA and FL.
She holds a BA in Art Education from Stetson University and a MALS in Art from Wesleyan University. She has studied painting with nationally recognized artists and teachers: Eric Aho, Ira Barkoff, Lois Dodd and Ruth Miller.
