July Beginning Plein Air (painting outdoors)

If you have never tried "painting out", this will be a gentle introduction, chock full of tips from plein air pro, Ellie Boyd.  Some familiarity with painting is helpful.  The class will start off with the basics and a quick introduction into looking at a scene and drawing/painting it directly on your canvas using tried and true methods. Come to Learn:
  • how to get outside and paint a simple scene
  • how to use a viewfinder and simple design tricks
  • how to make a thumbnail sketch and 3-value study
  • how to mix color using a limited palette
  • what to wear/take on your plein air adventure
The group will meet at a designated location in Southbury (TBD). Participants must be able to walk and carry gear over uneven terrain. Wear old clothes and bring a folding chair. Please the following supplies: Soft pencil & small sketchbook, Oil Paint—Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White, Burnt Umber; One-8” x 10” canvas panel or stretched canvas; brushes— One 1-inch flat, one 1/2” flat, and one 1/4” flat; solvent—Odorless Mineral Spirits; roll of paper towels; Easel; trash bag.  If you do not have a portable easel, please let the us know. Please bring your lunch, students will break for lunch and a light critique. Workshop Closed.
